6 Weird Ways To Know If You’re Healthy

As a kid I would come home from school and hear from my mom how her cancer patients were in remission after working with her for six months (literally), or how her latest cooking client had lost 15 pounds and was feeling more energized than ever.

She’s been a health consultant and personal chef for over 35 years.

She started in macrobiotics and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a meal delivery service that specifically catered to cancer patients. Now, she still works with cooking and consulting clients, but her scope of practice goes far beyond macrobiotics and cancer. She’s the coolest!

As an (outgoing) introvert, I’ve loved reading since I was little and was always curious about my mom’s holistic nutrition books.

I would research my symptoms and then experiment with holistic fixes (mostly food-based) starting around age 12.

I was a little stubborn, so I always wanted to experiment for myself when I probably should’ve been going straight to my mom for the answers. 😉

But hey, self-experimentation is the best way to learn what works for you.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles are woven into the fabric of who I am and what I teach now as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and Reiki practitioner, and I’m so grateful to have been exposed to them at a young age.

At the Institute for Integrative Nutrition I learned even more about TCM, and 100+ diets.

In over 10 years of testing different styles of eating, I created the Good Taste Method, my custom, non-diet approach to food that allows you to eat what you want and look and feel the way you’ve always imagined.

The best part? You don’t have to stick to a diet for the rest of your life.

That was always a fear of mine: That I could look and feel amazing, but I would have to follow some crazy low-carb diet to a T, forever.

And that sounded awful to me! Ugh. You too?

Now I know that I can have my ideal body and feel super energized and focused without counting calories or eliminating an entire food group.

As you might know, the Good Taste Method is nowhere near strictly-macrobiotic, and I don’t worship at the church of Chinese Medicine on the regular, but the principles are still an integral part of my approach.

There are a few really cool (and kinda weird) indicators you can look for to know if you’re healthy, based in TCM.

Take this quick little quiz to gauge your own health through the lens of Chinese Medicine…

QUIZ TIME!

1. How would you describe your nails? Choose the closest match.

A. Strong and almost completely clear in color.
B. Thin and cracking. They break easily.
C. Strong, but not super clear – they’re kind of discolored and have some white spots.

2. Is your hair shiny and strong?

A. Yeah, pretty much! Most of the time at least.
B. Eh, not really. It’s kind of dull and brittle.
C. It keeps falling out lately! Ugh.

3. Grab a mirror and look at the whites of your eyes. What do they look like?

A. Pretty clear and bright white.
B. They’re a little cloudy or kind of milky.
C. They get bloodshot often.

4. Do you get frequent cavities or find that your gums bleed when you brush and/or floss your teeth?

A. Little to none, and nope! All good.
B. Yes to one.
C. Yes to both!

5. How would you describe your skin?

A. It’s clear, hydrated, glowy, and bright almost all the time!
B. My skin is often dry or super oily, and sometimes dull and grey.
C. I get cystic breakouts along my jawline.

6. What’s happening with your digestion?

A. It’s great! I go to the bathroom every morning and it always feels like a healthy, complete elimination. I have little to no bloating or irritation.
B. I’m super irregular and feel icky. I never feel like I go to the bathroom “fully.” I get bloated really easily.

If you chose mostly As, congratulations! You’re pretty damn healthy. Rock on.

If you found yourself choosing mostly Bs and Cs, let’s get you boosted up!

The B and C symptoms are indicators of an overly yin or yang condition.

In most cases, a yin condition means you’re consuming too much caffeine, alcohol, and/or sugar (including fruit). A yang condition could mean you’re overly stressed and/or eating too much salt and starchy foods. But it’s not as simple as just reducing or removing those things.

What really matters is how you feel, inside and out.

Your hair and nails can be great indicators, but fixing them is not the definitive answer to your health issues.

To create effective, permanent changes to how you feel and look, we need to address your condition holistically.

I want you to feel A+ all the time, physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Your condition is unique, and it goes beyond the physical. Just like too much fried food can put stress on your liver, so can stress and anxiety.

You have a specific, complex nutritional-emotional-mental matrix you’re working with, and that’s why no cookie cutter diet has worked for you yet.

The good news?

By following a customized plan that’s designed for you by an expert, you can heal quite quickly.

Within six months, you won’t recognize yourself.

and daily practices in place.

That’s where the
Good Taste Method comes in.

Here’s how it works…

✓  We get on the phone and discuss what’s going on for you, and your specific body and lifestyle goals.

✓  You complete a 7-day food journal to give me a clear idea of where you’re at and exactly what could be triggering your symptoms and stopping you from shedding excess weight.

I design a custom 1-week food reset to clear out the cobwebs and get you in tune with your body, so you can follow your intuition when it comes to food.

✓  We transition you to a more flexible food and lifestyle plan that emphasizes your personal power foods while still including all your faves.

✓  You’re supported with monthly private coaching to untangle the behavioral patterns that lead to emotional eating and other wonky behavior with food, so you never feel crazy when faced with a tray of brownies at a party.

This is your life, and it’s happening now – this is not the dress rehearsal.

I don’t mean to get dramatic on you, but I feel really strongly that everyone deserves to feel their best for as many days, hours, and minutes of their lives as possible.
