Why intuitive eating? How does that work?

You cannot spend the rest of your life eating kale and grilled chicken while avoiding gluten and dairy.

This is why nothing else has worked long-term – not paleo, not Bulletproof, and certainly not that oh-I’ll-just-eat-way-less plan.

I’m the type of person who will try anything once, EXCEPT another diet.

Tried all of them. They all worked for a little while… until they stopped working. Labeled myself a “failure.” Too exhausting.

Even “clean eating” becomes problematic, because that implies some foods and ways of eating are “dirty.”

And what do we humans secretly want to do? Dirty and bad things. It’s why binge eating disorder, anorexia (not eating is just as rebellious as overeating), and bulimia are so common. 

It’s all the same underlying human desire: we want to be a little – or a lot – rebellious, depending on how much pressure and restriction we’re feeling.

When we constantly try to control what we eat, we enter a danger zone, because we’re much more likely to want to binge… then we beat ourselves up, and the cycle continues.

We end up never feeling GREAT in our bodies, or at peace with food.

We’re setting ourselves up for failure by trying to be “perfect” at every meal… and repressing our desire to be a little bad, which is perfectly healthy and necessary.

We all want to be that person who LOVES food and enjoys all the best cheese, bread, and desserts, but just naturally doesn’t overeat.

And those are usually the healthiest people.

The ones who feel great in their bodies and don’t obsess over food.

Little kids (and animals) are naturally that in tune. If a kid eats a bunch of candy on Halloween, they get a stomach ache, learn their lesson, and probably won’t eat THAT much candy for a while.

How can we get back to that as adults? Back to a place where…

1. We always know what to eat and how much without overthinking or obsessing.

2. We can have ANY type and/or quantity of food in front of us and only eat what we genuinely want*.

*Notice I didn’t say NEED. It’s ok to eat out of WANT sometimes. Food is inherently emotional. That’s ok. BUT if you often fall into blackout binges where you don’t remember what you ate, how much, or why, that’s a different story.

3. When we do eat more or differently than what feels good, we don’t beat ourselves up. We have unconditional love for ourselves.

For example, if you’re feeling guilty and scared you’ll get bigger while eating a piece of cheese, your body is much more likely to go into fight or flight mode and hang on to it for protection, rather than fully digesting it.

MY STORY…

I was recently sitting at one of my favorite restaurants in the West Village eating breakfast – mushroom scramble, crispy potatoes with horseradish cream, rye toast, and a way-too-big side of bacon.

Just how I like my bacon. Crispy, and lots of it. 

The toast didn’t look that amazing.

If it was a beautiful slice of sourdough it would usually be my first bite (with creamy grass-fed butter, of course). Halfway through the meal I noticed I hadn’t touched the bread, and my body didn’t want it. Interesting.

Ughhh, ok, so I used to semi-hate people who could have a basket of bread or tray of brownies in front of them and just eat a regular amount or avoid it altogether.

Willpower. Sleek hair. Perfect smile. Annoying.

I have wild curly hair with blonde, red, and brown in it, and I used to eat jars of Nutella and loaves of bread at a time. Cute.

That morning I had one of those now-common moments where I realize I’ve become one of those people. Someone who can have bread on their plate and only eat it if they truly want it.

I went from counting calories (only 1200/day) in high school and college, binging, and purging to trusting my instincts around food and literally NEVER overeating… without trying. I just can’t. My body’s like NOPE.

No willpower necessary, no struggle.

Now I teach my health coaching clients how to integrate this life-changing – and in some cases, life-saving – approach to food, intuitive eating. I’ve been doing this work for nearly a decade. 

Diets used to run my life, and my happiness depended on the scale. If I was 3 pounds lighter one day, my confidence and happiness would skyrocket.

When the number was higher than the previous day, I’d feel depressed, and embarrassed that I cared so much.

The toughest part? Even when a size 00 was big on me, I still wasn’t happy with my body.

Over the years following my eating disordered patterns, I slowly realized that it’s not all physical and that no matter how small my body got – even at an unhealthily low BMI – it would never make me happy or put me at ease.

So I stopped dieting altogether. Step by step, I began to eat intuitively and learn the foods that fuel me best, and the ones that don’t work so well.

I stopped putting labels on myself – like vegan or paleo – and no food was off limits. Things started to fall in to place.

I dropped my emotional eating patterns, like eating entire jars of Nutella in one week, and batches of brownies with peanut butter when I was anxious and stressed.

Added bonus?

My cystic acne seemed to magically disappear as I strengthened my intuition with food and truly got into a non-restrictive flow with eating. 

I found myself WAY less anxious, stressed, and depressed. My sleep quality improved by at least 80%. Everything clicked into place.

Here’s the thing: I love truffle grilled cheeses, peanut butter brownies, butter poached lobster, and perfect over-medium eggs.

I also love feeling light and strong in my body, focused, and full of energy.

Now my mission is to show you how you can drop emotional and physical heaviness and clear up chronic health conditions – like frustrating fatigue, bloating, and constipation – without restricting yourself or giving up your favorite foods.
